Health, Fitness and Wellbeing
Health: Complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not only the absence of illness. Being ill doesn’t mean you aren’t healthy. Health can also be recognised through other different feelings, such as: happiness, being socially accepted and mentally satisfaction.
Fitness: ‘The ability to meet the demands of the environment’. Fitness can be determined on the demands of an individual. E.g. Footballers will need to have higher fitness levels than an office worker due to the demands of their work.
Wellbeing: ‘A range of physical, social and mental factors which give people a sense of feeling healthy, comfortable and/or happy’.
There are 3 components of wellbeing:
- Physical health and wellbeing – refers to the idea of the body working effectively, without the risk of an injury or illness.
- Social health and wellbeing – refers to the idea of meeting basic human needs, the individual is comfortable in social situations as well as having friendship and support.
- Mental health and wellbeing – refers to the idea of coping with everyday stress in life, whilst being able to contribute to the wider community.
How does taking part in physical activity improve your physical/social and mental health and wellbeing?
Physical health and wellbeing:
- Reduce the risk of illness
- Improve cardiovascular functions
- Improve heart functions
Social health and wellbeing:
- Be able to socialise and make new friends
- Build up team work skills
Mental health and wellbeing:
- Reduce stress levels
- Be able to control your emotions
