AQA Paper 3 Advice and Walkthrough

1. Recap your knowledge of Micro (Paper 1) and Macro (Paper 2) as this will be essential for Paper 3

2. Ensure you do enough QUESTION PRACTICE – practice the unique elements of paper 3
– multiple choice questions
– planning 10 markers
– using extracts when analysing data for 15 and 25 markers

SECTION A – MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS (30 multiple choice questions – micro and macro)

1. When figuring out the correct answer for each question, think about WHY it is the right answer

2. Highlight keywords to avoid making silly errors

3. Familiarise yourself with how the four answers are written
          – there is always a distractor answer: seems like it could be correct, but is wrong
          – there is one correct answer
          – there are two clearly wrong answers so cancel them out first

4. Use the space around to write stuff down – maybe draw a diagram / formulate a chain analysis / write a definition etc

5. Time management – aim for 30 seconds per each question (20/25 mins in total for 30 multiple choice questions)

SECTION B – 3 ESSAY QUESTIONS

1. Usually the essays are linked to two written extracts given at the start of the paper

10 marker: approximately 20 minutes

1. ‘To what extent does the data…’, suggests you need to analyse, evaluate and come to a final judgement

2. Start by defining key terms

3. Then you will need to formulate three analysis paragraphs

4. In each analysis paragraph:
          – firstly IDENTIFY A DATA REFERENCE from the extract they have told
            you to refer to
          – then explain HOW that data reference help you answer the question
          – and finally WHY could that have happened

5. Examples of data reference points:
          – a start/end point in a trend line
          – the highest / lowest points
          – the correlation in a line of best fit
          – calculation a percentage or percentage change of something

6. After each analysis paragraph, you need some simple evaluation to show you understand the limitations of the data

7. Examples of evaluation points:
          – narrow time period
          – limited number of countries used
          – sources of data and whether they are bias
          – question correlation and causation
          – volatile data making it hard to come to a certain conclusion
          – nominal values used in dataset when real values would be more accurate

8. Finishing the essay with a FINAL JUDGEMENT – answer the question directly with justifications and evidence

9. Final sentence to suggest that you can not come to one specific conclusion due to the limitations of data

15 marker: approximately 20 minutes

1. Exactly the same style and structure as the 15 markers in paper 1 and paper 2

2. Define keywords at the start

3. Then two / three analysis paragraphs to follow

4. Use the extracts and refer to that wherever possible

25 marker: approximately 40 minutes

1. Exactly the same style / structure as the 25 markers in paper 1 and paper 2

2. Key use of extracts – analysis, evaluation and final judgement

3. Micro AND Macro analysis
