Map Scales and Scale Drawings

Courses Info

. The drawing of maps are scaled down because the actual length is too long

. The drawing length of buildings on a map is proportional to the real length

Drawing Length and Actual Length:

  1. Measure the distance between the two points on a map with a rule
  2. A scale of 1cm : 100m shows a 1cm measurement on the map is actually 100m in real life → workout the real length based on the measured length

Example:

The ratio of a map is 1cm : 300m. The distance between two places on the map is 12cm.

Q) What is the real distances between the two places

  1. The distance between both places is 12cm
  2. To get from 1cm to 12cm multiply by 12 therefore 300m x 12 → real distances = 3600m

A) 3600m
