Shape and Space – Volume

Shape and Space – Volume

Courses Info

Volume – the amount of space occupied by an object

. Volume is usually measured in cm3 and m3

. 1m³ = 1000 Litre

. 1000cm³ = 1 Litre

Calculating Volume:

. Volume in a cube and cuboid is find by multiplying length x width x height

Example:

Q) Find the volume of the tank with a width of 50cm, height 50cm and length of 1m

  1. 50 cm = 0.5m 0.5 x 0.5 x 1 = 0.25m3

A) 0.25m3

Tips:

. Make sure all the units of the sides are the same

. The best way to visualize the volume is to work out the side in this case the triangle 0.5 x 3 x 5 = 7.5

. The length 10 tells us we need 10 of the triangles to fill the space

. So, the volume of this shape is: 7.5 x 10 = 75
